MISSION STATEMENT

We, the Diversity Council for an Inclusive CSUEB (DCI), are a coalition of existing campus groups-- the Feminist Faculty Union, Black Faculty & Staff Association, Asian/Pacific Islander Faculty and Staff Association, Chicano/Latino Staff and Faculty Association—formed to become a voice for women, gay, lesbian, and faculty and staff of color a proactive way.

Our goals are to establish an on-going dialogue with the President about relevant diversity and equity issues (preferably through a position on the President’s cabinet), to advise the President on diversity and equity issues on campus, and to establish a student-centered multicultural and women’s center. Furthermore the DCI will monitor and ensure that all search committees represent women and faculty/staff of color. We also will work to establish, refine, and expand diversity training for all administrators, faculty, and staff.

An important area of concern for the DCI is our campus climate. While the WASC Climate Survey provides some insight into areas of alienation and isolation for women faculty, the limited number of responses to the survey from faculty of color discloses important areas of silence that need to be addressed. Moreover, the survey questions about discrimination based on sexual identity fail to gather essential information from gay and lesbian respondents about their experience. We need to work on generating better questions and measures that ensure full participation and that respond to the concerns of all faculty and staff in future campus climate surveys.

The DCI is committed to identifying areas of concern at the department, division, college, and University level. We will recommend targets and develop diversity and equity score cards that will assess the progress departments, divisions, and colleges throughout the University are making on issues of diversity and equity. We look forward to playing a major role in developing an inclusive, multicultural campus climate that will be a model for all campuses and universities.
